Foldable displays are all the rage. What with Intel, Dell and Microsoft all introducing foldable displays, it was only a matter of time before other manufacturers picked up on the trend. Lenovo is among those who intend to make foldable displays the next big thing.

By the look of things, it is safe to say that Lenovo may become the first company to actually get such displays in stores.

If CES 2020 is anything to go by then we can safely say that foldable displays are a big part of the computing revolution that is coming.

Lenovo used CES 2020 as a launching pad for their futuristic laptop, the Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Fold. Laptops are supposed to fold and it’s easy to see why the word fold on the laptop’s name does not elicit much excitement.

But that is only because you may not have the full range of knick-knacks fitted into this gadget. Lenovo first started teasing the laptop back in May 2019. It was slated to be the first-ever laptop with a foldable OLED display. Image result for Lenovo’s ThinkPad X1 Fold 2020

The laptop comes with a new form factor that Lenovo is counting on to make it one of the most sought-after gadgets in 2020. One of the main reasons Lenovo is eager to introduce the new laptop into the market is the different ways in which it will change mobile computing.

The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold is a device that can change from a portable device with a small footprint to a full-fledged laptop with 13 inches of display. With such a display that can seamlessly change through modes, customers will be getting the efficiency of a laptop with the portability of a mobile device.

Lenovo has not only thought about the specifications and what to improve from the ThinkPad line of laptops but also added stylish design to the new entrant in the line of laptops.

The laptop assembly involves a mix of carbon fiber and lightweight alloys complete with a swish leather cover. Aside from all the embellishments that make it a stylish device to be holding in your hands, the X1 Fold in no exception when it comes to the reliability and superb functioning that has become synonymous with the ThinkPad line of laptops.

The X1 Fold incorporates Intel’s engineering brilliance as it is powered by Core processors from Intel and also includes Intel’s Hybrid Technology.

The laptop will run on a Windows 10 operating system. Lenovo also intends to upgrade the operating system to Windows 10X later on, which will enhance the user experience and give access to more foldable features on the laptop.

There is also the small issue of 5G connection that we are all anxiously waiting for. The Lenovo ThinkPad X will give users the option to use a 5G connection, which will give a new meaning to all-round usage.

Availability and Pricing details

The X1 Fold has been years in the making, and apart from the sneak peek that they let us see last year, there was little more revealed about the laptop.

Now we have an actual price tag to put on the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold. The truth is, it’s not the slightest bit cheap. Customers will have to fork out $2,499 (about AU$3,620, £1,920) to get in on the action. That’s a bit on the higher end for a laptop.

That said, you have to consider the fact that this is a first of its kind and the price is more of an adopter tax. It is the first laptop with a foldable display to make it to the market and it was sort of expected that it would come with such a price tag.

When it comes to market availability, there is not much to report about. Lenovo has always alluded to a release in late 2020 without giving an actual date. The release date shall be announced soon enough and you can count on us to keep you posted when Lenovo does give out solid dates.

Design

As expected, the laptop sports an “innie” fold for the display as an “outie” one would not apply to laptop usage.

The display is made by LG electronics and is coated in plastic instead of glass. That is mainly because foldable glass covers are yet to be developed.

At the CES 2020 convention, Lenovo did talk ecstatically about the future for foldable displays. They focused mainly on graphene, which is a wonderful piece of technology that will hopefully find its way into mass production in the near future.

The X1 Fold comes with a bezel that is rather wide. The bezel is connected to a single torque hinge that juts out a little from either end of the mid-section.

A rubberized fabric has been fitted at this section to serve as the connective tissue that allows for bending.

Lenovo is sticking to the stylus pen that was part of the prototype. However, they have done away with the magnetic attachment that worked to hold the pen and have instead included a loop that the pen can be slotted into.

Now we focus on the leather cover that protects the laptop back.

The X1 Fold looks luxurious when folded and that’s because of the leatherback that makes it look like a folio case or a book when closed. When opened, the leather cover moves so that it is easier to use the laptop.

The cover isn’t the most important part of the laptop and it could stay without it but it does make it pleasant to look at. Besides, top-notch aesthetics are part of the deal when you are forking out such an amount for a device like this.

Touch typing may prove odd what with the display stretching to 13 inches. This is countered by a detachable keyboard in case you have some lengthy typing to do.

That the screen has a plastic cover means that users will have to contend with a bit of glare.

This will be a problem mostly for you who intend to use the device in an outdoors setting such as the park. Ultimately, the design features are quite impressive.

The device comes with Bluetooth keyboard support, which, coupled with the pseudo-dual-screen features, increases its portability immensely.

Watching movies and reading e-books on the go should be quite enjoyable on the device. With a 4:3 aspect ratio, the screen fits perfectly for most of your viewing needs.

Performance

The X1 Fold is being marketed as a device that professionals can depend on to work on the go. At CES Lenovo did little to inform us about the kind of processor to be used on the device, only mentioning that the processor is one among the “unannounced” intel processors.

This could mean that Lenovo will fit one of two processors, Intel Lakefield or Tiger Lake. The former is the likelier guess in this case. Lakefield processors have been mentioned in the same breath as such foldable laptops in several instances because they are the perfect fit.

The idea of having a complete system on a single chip such as a smartphone indicates that Lenovo might be the first device equipped with Lakefield processors. However, this is just speculation and we’ll have to wait to find out whether they go this route.

Lenovo is not giving anything away in the way of specifications, mostly to keep customers and tech enthusiasts guessing as we are. It is likely that the computer will have a formidable 16GB RAM size and an SSD that is just as fast. Apart from that, we don’t know anything about the laptop’s capabilities.
