What Qualifies for a Custom Quote?
Custom quotes cover shipments that are not in one of our prepaid boxes, or that we need to check before they ship. Prices are based on exact measurements, weight, shipping method and delivery in Kenya. We do not handle tractors or heavy equipment.
Ocean Freight Custom Items:
- Motorcycles, ATVs and vehicle engines (contact us before you buy)
- Furniture, new in its box or boxed if used (no assembled furniture)
- Commercial goods less than a container load, quoted case by case
- Palletized cargo
- Full container loads (20-foot or 40-foot)
- Household goods when you are moving to Kenya
Air Freight Custom Items:
- Your own box, sent with a US carrier label you buy online
- Boxes that do not match one of our prepaid box sizes
- Valuable items: freight insurance applies to higher declared values
- Pickup from your US address, or drop-off with the carrier
- Electronics with built-in batteries (loose batteries and power banks cannot fly)
- Business stock that needs to arrive quickly
How to Request a Custom Quote
Gather Your Shipment Details
Measure the length, width and height in inches and weigh it in kilograms (the online box form asks for pounds: 1 kg is about 2.2 lb). Note what is inside, its value and whether it should go by air or ocean. Photos help when we quote an item by hand.
Submit Quote Request
For your own box, enter its details on our online quote page with your US address and your receiver's delivery location in Kenya. For items we quote by hand, contact us via WhatsApp, email, phone or the Communication Center in your dashboard.
Receive Your Quote
The online box form shows an all-inclusive price from each available carrier straight away. Quotes prepared by our team are emailed to you with a link to view them, and they also appear under Quotes in your account.
Review & Accept
Review the quote carefully and ask us about anything that is unclear. Approve it before it expires: an expired quote cannot be approved online, so ask us to update it.
Pickup & Shipment
For your own box, pay, print the label, then drop the box off with the carrier or wait for the carrier to collect it. In select Texas areas, ocean freight pickups can be booked from your account. Your shipment then follows the normal schedule: air departs every Wednesday, ocean in the last week of every month.
Information Needed for Accurate Quotes
To provide the most accurate quote, please have the following information ready:
Item Details:
- Exact dimensions (L x W x H) in inches
- Total weight in kg (the online box form takes pounds)
- Description and quantity of items
- Photos of the items (if possible)
- Value of the items, used for customs and insurance
Shipping Details:
- Your US address (street, city, state and ZIP code)
- Your receiver's name, Kenya phone number and delivery location
- Preferred shipping method (air or ocean)
- How soon you need it in Kenya
- Anything fragile or needing special handling
What Affects Custom Quote Pricing?
Custom quotes are calculated based on several factors to ensure fair and accurate pricing:
Dimensional Weight
By air, you pay for the chargeable weight: the greater of the actual weight and the volumetric weight (L x W x H in inches / 306, in kg). By ocean, you pay by volume: L x W x H in inches / 1728 gives cubic feet. Each shipment has a minimum charge, which is a floor, not an extra fee.
Shipping Method
Air freight departs every Wednesday and takes 7-14 working days. Ocean freight departs in the last week of every month, takes 75-90 days and costs less for heavy or bulky items. We'll recommend the best option for your budget and timeline.
Special Handling
Items that need extra packing or careful handling can cost more. Anything extra is shown in your quote.
Destination
Pickup at our Westlands office in Nairobi is free. Home delivery is charged per box for ocean (the same rate anywhere in Kenya) and by weight for air, and the fee is shown on your quote or invoice.
