When buying anything in Kenya, you pay the cost of the item + Value Added Tax (VAT). 

If you don't see price + VAT, the price you see includes an extra 16% VAT but somehow you are paying it.

In the USA, this tax, similar to VAT is called Sales Tax and it differs from one state to another.

The state in which your shipper address is located determines how much sales tax you pay when shopping USA stores.

Some states are higher than others, we have a ZERO TAX-free USA address.

Each state in the USA has different sales tax rates.

Shipping companies shipping from the USA to Kenya are based in the following states ranked in the order of the highest to lowest sales tax.

• Packaging: Ensure your items are securely packed in a sturdy box. Use bubble wrap or foam peanuts for fragile items.

4. Calculating Chargeable Weight:

• Formula: Chargeable weight is determined by the greater of the actual weight or the volumetric weight. The volumetric weight is calculated using the formula: $\text{Volume in inches}÷306$ Then, multiply the result by the rate ($14.50/kg).

• Scenario 1: Chargeable by Volume

  • Box Dimensions: 18 inches x 12 inches x 10 inches.
  • Calculate the volume: 18 x 12 x 10 = 2,160 cubic inches.
  • Calculate the volumetric weight: 2,160 ÷ 306 = 7.06 kg.
  • Calculate the cost: 7.06 x $14.50 = $102.37.
  • Actual Weight of the Box: 5 kg. Since the volumetric weight (7.06 kg) is greater than the actual weight (5 kg), you'd be charged based on the volumetric weight, which would be $102.37.

• Scenario 2: Chargeable by Actual Weight

  • Box Dimensions: 10 inches x 10 inches x 10 inches.
  • Calculate the volume: 10 x 10 x 10 = 1,000 cubic inches.
  • Calculate the volumetric weight: 1,000 ÷ 306 = 3.27 kg.
  • Calculate the cost based on volume: 3.27 x $14.50 = $47.42.
  • Actual Weight of the Box: 4 kg. Since the actual weight (4 kg) is greater than the volumetric weight (3.27 kg), you'd be charged based on the actual weight, which would be 4 kg x $14.50 = $58.

Kentex Cargo Ocean Shipping Guide

1. Preparing a Shipment Meant for Ocean Shipping:

• Packaging: Ensure your items are securely packed in a durable crate or pallet. Ocean shipping can be rough, so it's essential to protect your items adequately.
• Labeling: Clearly label the crate or pallet with the recipient's name, address, and contact information. Also, include your return address.
• Documentation: Attach any necessary customs or shipping documents on the outside in a waterproof sleeve.

2. Ordering Items Online and Shipping to Our Delaware Warehouse:

• Shopping: When shopping online, use the address of our Delaware warehouse as the shipping address.
• Notification: Once you've placed an order, notify us with the details of your purchase, so we can expect your package.
• Consolidation: If you have multiple packages, we can consolidate them into one shipment to save on shipping costs.

3. Using Carriers or Our Pickup Service:

• Carriers: You can use third-party carriers to deliver your freight to our Delaware warehouse.
• Pickup Service: We offer a pickup service for customers within a 100-mile radius of Wilmington, Delaware. Just schedule a pickup, and we'll handle the rest!

4. Restrictions on Used Furniture:

5. Calculating Chargeable Volume:

• Formula: Chargeable volume is based solely on the volume of the shipment, not its weight. The chargeable volume is calculated using the formula: $\text{Volume in inches}÷1728$ Then, multiply the result by the rate ($30/cubic foot). There's a minimum charge of $300.

• Scenario 1: Small Crate

  • Crate Dimensions: 12 inches x 12 inches x 12 inches.
  • Calculate the volume: 12 x 12 x 12 = 1,728 cubic inches.
  • Calculate the chargeable volume: 1,728 ÷ 1,728 = 1 cubic foot.
  • Calculate the cost: 1 x $30 = $30. Since the cost ($30) is below the minimum charge, you'd be billed $300.

• Scenario 2: Large Pallet

  • Pallet Dimensions: 48 inches x 48 inches x 48 inches.
  • Calculate the volume: 48 x 48 x 48 = 110,592 cubic inches.
  • Calculate the chargeable volume: 110,592 ÷ 1,728 = 64 cubic feet.
  • Calculate the cost: 64 x $30 = $1,920. You'd be charged $1,920 for this shipment.

6. Shipping Schedule and Lead Time:

• We load shipments every last Saturday of the month.
• The lead time for ocean shipping is 45 days, ensuring your items reach Kenya safely and securely.

7. Prohibited and Regulated Items for Ocean Shipping:

• Used Furniture: As mentioned, we do not accept used furniture due to potential damage and the inability to stack them efficiently.
• Hazardous Materials: Items such as flammable liquids, explosives, or toxic substances are prohibited.
• Perishable Goods: Items that can decay or spoil during the 45-day lead time, like certain foods or plants, are not allowed.
