  1. Design

Acer Chromebook Tab 10 initially intended for students. Its sturdy form strikes a good balance between style and practicality. The device is lightweight and can handle a few blunders and bumps. Thanks to its robust nature.

The tablet weighs 1.21 pounds with a dimension of 6.78x 9.38 x 0.39 inches which is a bit heavy compared to its similarly sized tablets. Just like many tablets, it comes with a pocket plastic shell surrounding the display with some thick bezels.

It has a grippy textured backing on the back making it comfortable to hold. Unlike many tablets, it does not have a home button and the Acer logo is embedded there instead. The control for apps and going home is onscreen. This leaves a clean tablet face with only a camera at the top.

  1. Ports and Connectivity

On the left side of the Acer Chromebook Tab 10 is where to find the power key and volume rocker. A microSD card reader is situated just below the power key. On the left bottom at the corner is a small active Stylus tucked away, 3 speaker panels and a USB Type-C charging port and for connecting external hardware like the mouse, keyboard and display.

At the top of the Tab10 is a 3.5mm headphone jack, a microphone, and 3 speaker cutouts. Since the speakers are positioned in different places, how you hold your tablet 10 while it's sitting in your laps may affect the sound quality.

  1. Display

Acer Chromebook Tab 10 9.7 inches screen comes with an LCD that has a resolution of 2048x1536 pixels. With a maximum brightness of 382nits, the tablet brightness is below the average category of 416 nits. However, it is enough when watching videos or working from outdoors. The viewing angles are well enhanced by the IPS technology inside.

  1. Stylus

Apart from using your fingers to type, you can use the Wacom EMR stylus provides as your input method. This is a traditional pencil that is tacked at the bottom right corner at the back of the Tab 10. It is easier to use the stylus to take notes, sketch, zoom and take a screenshot.

The stylus does not require any charging or pairing so that it can be sued right away without waiting. The stylus works just fine but since it is short, it gets tiring to hold and use it for long. Generally, the stylus makes navigating around the tablet easier, creating notes quickly and sync them to Google Drive.

  1. Performance

Acer Chromebook Tab 10 runs with a Chrome operating system. The major challenge is that the Chrome OS was not initially designed to run on a tablet. Therefore, some things may not work right. The integration of a Chrome OS on a touchscreen tablet without a keyboard means that some things are harder to do. Also, not all Android apps are compatible with the Chrome OS. The absence of physical controls like a keyboard and mouse is unimpressive to most new users.

Since the Acer Chromebook Tab 10 was designed for the education market, it comes with an OP1 processor, internal storage of 32GB, integrated graphics and a 4GB RAM. The processor and storage are not impressive but its overall performance is good on basic Chrome OS students' tasks. While operating your Tab 10 avoid multitasking as you may experience unresponsiveness or sluggishness.

  1. Keyboard

Since the Tab 10 does not have a keyboard, the only input method in the tab is to use its virtual keyboard on the Chrome OS software. This keyboard is not any close to the Gboard which makes typing long files extremely frustrating. The keyboard weirdly capitalizes the first letter in every word when using some Android Apps.

The Chrome OS built-in keyboard ruins the typing experience. But Google tends to bring Gboard along on the Chrome OS which will improve this mess. Luckily, any Bluetooth keyboard in the market pairs with the Tab10 which you can buy and improve your typing skills.

  1. Speakers

The tablet comes with 6 speakers' cutouts. However, don't be fooled by the number of speakers and think the sound is of great quality. The Tab10 is really quiet. The speakers are barely loud enough for a small office. How students hear videos in a classroom full of students and noise is still a mystery. The bass and treble balance is okay but it lacks depth.

  1. Cameras

Acer Chromebook Tab10 is not really meant for mainstream media. Its cameras are nothing close to admirable. The Tab has a 2MP front camera and a 5MP rear camera. Due to the lack of autofocus and LED flash, images are not appealing. They turn out to be blotchy. But the camera is just fine to do its desired tasks such as classroom use, video calling or taking snaps for something you need to remember at school.

  1. Battery Life

Equipped with a 4500mAh battery, this is enough to last a school busy day. The battery can last up to nine hours on moderate use for basic tasks. Of course, things like the level of brightness and Wi-Fi, and gaming can reduce the battery stand time.

  1. Education Features

As mentioned earlier, Acer Chromebook Tab10 was designed for students. Though it uses the Chrome OS which solely operates on the Google Chrome web browser, students can access the Android applications from the Google Play Store.

Though some applications are not compatible yet, Tab 10 has some educational features that improve the learning experience. This includes features like Google Expeditions that enable students to have virtual trips to the field in the comfort of their classroom. The Chrome OS also has the Google Expeditions AR which enables students to view 3D objects in Augmented Reality which makes learning easier visually. The Chrome OS brings education features to students to improve their learning experience.

  • Long-lasting battery
  • Durable with a rugged design perfect for schools\stylus included for quick note-taking and sketching

Cons

  • Poor speakers
  • The short stylus that makes typing long files tiresome
  • Low-quality cameras
  • Can't multitask
  • Operating the chrome OS without a keyboard is annoying
  • Slow processor
  • Does not come with a Bluetooth keyboard

Verdict

Being the first Chromebook tablet in the world, Tab 10 is expected to have its number of missteps. However, the point to remember is that the device was not designed for mainstream media but education. By looking at it as an education tool you can tell that the gadget has its own perks and it delivers in its desired word.

First, the tablet uses a Chrome operating system that has education tools in it like the Goggle Expeditions that enhance and improves learning. Second, the rugged design of the textured back is perfect for a school setting. It also has a long-lasting battery that is enough to last for a school day. The Wacom stylus that requires no pairing or charging ensures that students can take quick notes.

With all the benefits, Acer Chromebook Tab10 needs to make some improvements to improve its overall performance. The main drawback is its software keyboard that is nerve-racking to use. Google needs to improve the in-built keyboard to improve the typing experience and its slow processor which doesn't support multitasking. When the Chrome OS will be optimized for the mainstream there will be plenty of Chrome OS tablets. The software has its drawbacks but its working for the school and only needs a few improvements.
