Lenovo added a new line of laptops later 2019 named the ThinkBook. The laptop was designed to be a workhorse that would serve small and medium-sized businesses. ThinkBook laptops are synonymous with good security features and slim design that makes for ultra-portability. The laptop also has a lot to offer in the way of connectivity, which is good for business-oriented features such as extended services.

In this piece we shall be focusing on the ThinkBook 13s is packed with a 1.6 GHz Core i5 processor, also referred to as the “Whiskey Lake” processor. It spots Intel UHD 620 graphics (integrated) with 8GB RAM space and a 256GB drive. With such hardware, the ThinkBook 13s is one for the businessman looking to get some work done on the go.

The ThinkBook 13s has a solid built that is evident from the choice of outer casing used. The laptop computer measures 0.63 by 8.5 by 12.1 inches. It is not as heavy as you would expect and weighs 1.4 kgs. The ThinkBook is clad in aluminum casing and is immediately recognizable from the ThinkPad. While the ThinkPad has a darker color, the ThinkBook series comes in a color Lenovo call Mineral Gray. The laptop design includes a thick chassis that accommodates a number of ports including a couple of USB 3.1 ports, one of which is always on. On the left side, it houses a full-size HDMI port and a USB-C port, and a 3.5mm jack for your headsets. The proprietary Lenovo charger (square) is also located on the left.

Once you turn the ThinkBook 13s on then you realize that this is a computer meant to handle a ton of work. The computer includes a decent screen with 1920x1080 pixel resolution with FHD resolution and IPS. The panel around the screen has a matte finish. The computer sticks to a practical screen without touch sensitivity which keeps the price down. The display has a brightness of 300 nits which is not the brightest but can be taken down a notch or two for purposes of preserving the battery. The colors are subtle and saturated as the contrast is well-balanced. The screen also has an anti-glare finish, which reduces the amount of reflection quite significantly.

The screen is hinged to lay flat but cannot move any further. On the shorter edges, the bezels measure 5.5mm, which is quite thin. The upper and lower edges are a bit more sizeable at 33mm. Lenovo’s camera includes the ThinkShutter, which lets you cover the camera to keep out any online snoopers. You can also disable the camera using an Fn key.

Turning the computer on

Turn on and sign-in are intuitive and this is one the best parts of the computer. There is no lengthy sign-in process or need for a password. Though it does not include face recognition the computer has a fingerprint scanner that sits on the power button. The switch is surrounded by a white LED when the computer is turned on.

Sound features

The ThinkBook 13s is fitted with Harman speakers mounted at the bottom with a decent base and loud enough audio. The speakers are top-notch quality and you will not hear that buzzy or tinny sound even at full volume. Audio is enhanced by the inclusion of Dolby Audio software which provides an equalizer with presets such as voice, game, movie, and music.

Keyboard and Typing Lenovo-ThinkBook-13S-price-in-kenya

Lenovo keeps its keyboard styling, that spots potbellied keys that make it that much easier to aim at them than the square keys. The keyboard is backlit, which is a brilliant addition borrowed from HP laptops. The only aspect that Lenovo gets wrong is choosing to go with the cursor keys lined in a row rather than an inverted T.  The Enter key double-width, single height and easy enough to find. This laptop does not live up to the world-class standards of the ThinkPad keyboard but typing with the ThinkBook 13s is not so bad. The touchpad responds quite well and has a smooth feel to it with very minimal clicking pressure. The keys are well sprung and deliver a ‘thunk’ rather than a click, so you don’t have to worry about the irritating click sound that most laptop keyboards make.

Storage, productivity and media test

For this, we used the PCMark 10 and 8 suites. These are performance suites developed by UL (formerly known as Futuremark). We ran the PCMark 10 test first in order to simulate various office scenarios for content-creation workflows in real-world settings. This would assess the computer’s performance on typical office tasks such as spreadsheeting, word processing, videoconferencing, and Web browsing. The test gives a numeric score where higher scores indicate better performance.

PCMark 8, on the other hand, is used for assessing the speed at which the storage system operates. Here as well, a higher score is better as it indicates better performance. The ThinkBook 13s performed well on both tests. Though it did not reach 4,000 points, which marks some of the best-performing systems, it was not so far back at 3456 points. You should encounter no issues while running your PowerPoint, Excel, and such as programs.

We also ran the Cinebench R15 test from Maxon. The test is meant to put all the processor cores to use in order to render an image. The processor cores, as they produce this complex image, register a score which is used to determine how well the PC can handle workloads that are processor intensive. In this case, Lenovo is stark in the middle if we are talking about the fastest 3D rendering. It has not workstation kind of robustness but it won’t keep you from performing your everyday tasks.

Testing the battery life

For this, we carried out a rundown test for unplugged video. This was done after some tweaking that would help the PC conserve energy. It was also placed in power-saver mode rather than a high-performance mode or balanced mode. The laptop was also placed in Airplane mode thus Wi-Fi was turned off. The test is carried out by playing a locally stored video file of 720p quality. Screen brightness is set at 50 percent with the volume at 100 percent. The video is played in a loop until the system shuts down. The ThinkBook 13s passed this test quite impressively going past 14 hours, which is indicates fitting battery life. That is enough battery power to last you through the day. With such battery life, you can also use the PC on your flight and still have some power left for a work session in your hotel room.

It’s a ThinkPad at a bargain

With the price at under $1,000, this ultra-portable laptop computer is a satisfactory choice for people who intend to use it for long hours on a daily basis. This is the PC for small business proprietors that want Lenovo quality minus over-the-roof pricing. You don’t get the full experience of having the ThinkPad but it is clear that Lenovo was going for a cheaper priced version of the computer with this release.
